Evaluation of the June 12th Turkey's General Elections
27.10.2011

Public declaration of the Abant Platform on the evaluation of the June 12th election, held in Ceylan Hotel, Taksim, İstanbul, on June 16th, 2011.

1. The results of the June 12 elections, with an 87 % political participation and a 95 % representation of the votes in the Parliament, brought about a historical chance to form a new constitution and solve the Kurdish problem.

2. The fact that no single party in the Parliament is able to form a new constitution unilaterally is a great opportunity for consensus that is needed when drafting the new constitution as well as resolving the Kurdish problem.

3. In the process of finding solutions to Turkey’s urgent democratization needs, a free discussion environment is necessary in and out of the Parliament.

4. While drafting a new constitution, Parliament has to call for other constitutional drafts made by the NGOs and civic organizations.
